A hospital ship offering hope

If “Mercy Ships” didn’t exist, someone would have to invent them! The eponymous international aid organization gives hope to patients who are unable to access medical services, particularly specialist surgery.

Since it was founded, the organization has focused on providing pragmatic help on its hospital ships in developing countries. Staff from over 40 countries work voluntarily, providing assistance in the form of operations and dental treatments. Longer-term benefits are assured by projects offering training programs that enable local specialist personnel to help their compatriots. Geistlich Pharma is hugely impressed by the meaningful work carried out onboard, and believes it to be a worthwhile cause. So once again this year the company has chosen the "Mercy Ships" as the recipient of its annual donation.

Free operations for the poorest

"Mercy Ships" was founded in 1978 by Don Stephens in Lausanne, becoming a not-for-profit organization under Swiss law in 1995. The surgical assistance is geared to specialist surgery. In particular people with large facial tumors, deformities and disfigurements are operated on free of charge on board thanks to the help provided by specialist surgeons from all over the world. The range of medical support includes oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, eye surgery and gynecology.

Geistlich wishes "Mercy Ships" continued success with its very worthwhile projects and, as a company working in regenerative medicine, is delighted to make a contribution to the pragmatic assistance being provided to those in need.
